World Language Standards: Stage II


                        Range and Phase of Proficiency: Intermediate-Mid

                                                    Class Level 4

              Stages of Language Proficiency: There are 5 stages of language proficiency on the ILR

              Scale. Following are the guidelines for the students at Stage II of Punjabi Proficiency.

              Performance     (Created): Learners understand and produce sentences and strings of sentences.

             Content:         2.0 Students acquire information, recognize distinctive viewpoints
             Stage II         2.1 Students address topics related to self and the immediate environment, including:
                              a. Social relationships
                              b. People in the community, interacting with people in the community
                              c. Zoo and farm animals, fables

                              d. Holiday customs and transition points in life
                              e. Significant historical figures
                              f. Professions
                              g. Cuisine and recipes

                              h. Health, medical care
                              i. Names of days, months and seasons

             Structures       2.0 Students use sentence-level elements to understand concrete topics.
             Stage II         2.1 Use sentence-level elements to produce informal communications.

             Communication    2.0 Students use created language (sentences and strings of sentences).

                              2.4 Initiate, participate in, and close a conversation; ask and answer questions.
                              2.5 Demonstrate understanding of the general meaning, key ideas, and details in texts.
                              2.6 Produce and present a written or oral product in a culturally authentic way.

              Cultures:       2.0 Students choose an appropriate response to a variety of situations.
              Stage II        2.1 Demonstrate understanding of the roles that products/practices play in the culture.
                              2.2 State similarities and differences in two cultures.
                              2.3 State reasons for cultural borrowings.

              Settings        2.0 Students use language in highly predictable common daily settings.
              Stage II        2.1 Recognize age-appropriate cultural/language-use opportunities outside the classroom.
