Lesson 3: The Nishan Sahib: The Sikh Flag
When we see a flag, we know it represents a country. Nishan Sahib is a
flag that does not represent a country, but it represents a Gurdwara. It
is a sign of Sikh royalty. It means that in the Gurdwara Sahib only the
rules and traditions given by our Gurus apply.
Every Gurdwara has a flag outside called Nishan Sahib. When you
see a Nishan Sahib, you know there is a Gurdwara there. You can go
in and see Guru Granth Sahib. You can also eat Langar.
The Nishan Sahib is orange or
Saffron colored triangular flag.
It has a Khanda in the center.
It is flown on a tall flagstaff
on the grounds of a Gurdwara.
The flagstaff is topped by a
steel Khanda.
The flagstaff is also covered by the
orange or saffron cloth.
Every Visakhi, Sadh Sangat in Gurdwaras hoist a new Nishan Sahib. It
is fun to watch. Next time on Visakhi, go to Gurdwara early in the
morning and watch the Nishan Sahib ceremony.
