Lesson 20: Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji
Guru Granth Sahib Ji is our Guru now.
It is in the form of a Book, but we
believe it to be our Living Guru. Guru
Granth Sahib Ji has 1430 Pages or Ang.
Ang means a body part. The words inside
the Guru Granth Sahib are called Gurbani.
Gurbani means- the words and the message
of the Gurus. All of the Gurbani on 1430
pages is written in poetry and can be sung.
Guru Granth Sahib Ji includes the Gurbani or the words of the Sikh
Gurus. Guru Arjan Dev Ji, our fifth Guru, collected and saved Gurbani
of all the four Gurus before him. He also added the Bani from some
holy people who were not Sikhs, but they believed and thought like Sikhs.
He called this book ‘Pothi Sahib’.
When Guru Arjan Dev Ji got the Harimandar Sahib built in Amritsar,
Pothi Sahib was installed in Harimandar Sahib. It was in Sixteen hundred
four (1604). That was the “Parkash Divas” of Guru Granth Sahib.
Before Guru Gobind Singh Ji left this world in Seventeen hundred eight
(1708), he decided that Pothi Sahib will become the new Guru of the
Sikhs. He then called it Guru Granth Sahib. He bowed his head to
Granth Sahib and said the Guru Granth was the eternal Guru of Sikhs.
This day when the Adi Granth became our Eternal Guru is called
“Gurgaddi Diwas”. Sikhs all over the world celebrate this day.
